After the death of more than 100 children, apparently due to Acute Enchephalitis Syndrome (AES) in Bihar's Muzaffarpur, state Chief Minister Nitish Kumar paid a visit to the Shri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) to take stock of the situation.

The state government has come under severe criticism for failing to take preventive measures in cases and deaths due to AES.

The National Human Rights Commission has also sought a response from the state and central governments in the matter.

AES, known as Chamki fever,  has created a panic like situation in Muzaffarpur and nearby districts.

It is being rumoured that children who eat Litchi are dying of the fever. But doctors say that it is not Litchi but malnutrition that has caused the fever. If litchi is the cause then why kids living in urban areas are not affected with the fever? they ask.

On June 17, 2019, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan and State Health Minister Mangal Pandey paid a visit to SKMCH to take stock of the situation.
