NEW DELHI: Having been terminated from their jobs, over 50 contractual workers of Employees' State Insurance Model Hospital, Basai Darapur, Delhi, are protesting in the hospital premises since June 18, 2019, demanding to be re-appointed.
The protestors were raising their voices against the fact that they were terminated and then replaced by staff hired by a new contractor. They also protested against the fact that they were being rendered jobless even though there were enough vacancies to accommodate them.
The future looks rather bleak for these workers, who include lift and pump operators, gardeners and others who have been working in the hospital for the last 25 years. Most of them are in the 40 to 50 years of age bracket.
The protestors were joined at the hospital by the Delhi State CITU general secretary, Anurag Saxena, and CITU vice president H C Pant. They intend to carry on protesting till they are reappointed.
The employees said that their services were terminated as the new contractor, who is supplying manpower from June 18, 2019, replaced them.
“We submitted a memorandum to the hospital authority, seeking intervention,” said Ram Tirath, working on contract for nine years.
He said the contractor was changed every year and the jobs of all employees were at his mercy as the ESI had outsourced manpower supply.
