Pharmacy council against opening new colleges for 5 yrs

 BS RAWAT
NEW DELHI : As the mushrooming of pharmacy colleges has created an “imbalance,” the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) has urged all state and Union Territories governments not to permit the opening of new colleges in the country for five years beginning from the academic year 2020-21, except in the northeast region.

The PCI has written to all Chief Secretaries, Principal Secretaries (Health) and Principal Secretaries (Technical Education) of all states for not opening of new colleges after a resolution passed by the council in a recent meeting.

The letter informs, “The resolution has been communicated to Union Health Ministry on 17-07-2019 for information under intimation to All India Council for Technical Education and also posted on the Council’s website.”

At present, as many as 1,985 D. Pharma and 1,439 B. Pharma colleges are functioning in the country, the annual intake of students in these colleges is 2,19,279. As many as 300 colleges in the country are operating on the basis of preliminary clearances given by the All India Council for Technical Education and a conduct of courses permission by the PCI.

PCI Registrar-cum-Secretary Archna Mudgal noted, “The rapid increase in the number of pharmacy colleges over the last decade may result in shortage of trained and qualified teaching faculty which may affect the quality of education imparted to students.”

Ms Mudgal said, “The pass out students are not getting reasonably paid job opportunities in public as well as in private sector.”
