The Indian Health Ministry has banned the use of Colistin drug and its formulations for food producing animals, poultry, aqua farming and animal feed supplements.

The ministry, in a notification, has said that the use of Colistin, an antibiotic, in poultry may pose risk to human health.

The ministry has directed manufacturers of Colistin and its formulations that they shall label the container of the drug and mention the words “Not to be used in Food Producing Animals, Poultry, Aqua Farming and Animal Feed Supplements” in conspicuous manner on the package insert and promotional literature of the drug.

The matter related to Colistin was brought before the Health Ministry's Drugs Technical Advisory Board (DTAB) which recommended prohibiting the use of the drug in food producing animals, poultry, aqua farming and animal feed supplements.

Dr S Eswara Reddy, Drugs Controller General of India, said that Colistin is an antibiotic drug which is used for therapeutic purpose in veterinary. But this drug is highly misused in poultry industry as a growth promoter for prophylactic purpose.

“One of the reasons for anti-microbial resistance in India is the unwanted use of Colistin in poultry industry. The notification will prevent use of Colistin for prophylactic use,” added Dr Reddy.
