The Indian Health Ministry has decided to administer rotavirus vaccine to every child in the country by September 2019.

It is estimated that rotavirus kills 78,000 children every year in India. The deadly virus, which laeds to severe diarrhoea, causes 8,72,000 hospitalizations and 32,70,000 outpatient visits every year.

Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan has said that the health ministry has an ambitious plan under the 100-days agenda of the newly elected government, wherein it will provide Rotavirus vaccine to every child across all 36 states and UTs by September, 2019.

Dr Vardhan added that the health ministry is determined to eliminate morbidity and mortality in children due to diarrhoea by 2022.

Dr Vardhan further said that diarrhoea is one of the biggest killers in children and rotavirus is one of the most common causes of severe diarrhoea in children less than 2 years of age.

“Rotavirus vaccine, along with proper sanitation, hand washing practices, ORS and zinc supplementation, will go a long way in reducing the mortality and morbidity due to diarrhoea in children,” explained Dr Vardhan.
