The Federation of Resident Doctors Association (Forda)-India has sought the intervention of Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the assault case where security guards and marshals were recently thrashed by a mob of 40 people in Delhi's Safdarjung Hopital.

Forda has demanded arrest of people behind in the attack and sought strict action against the local DCP for ‘dereliction’ of duty.

“We residents doctors are outraged, appalled, an anguished by the barbaric acts of violence. We are torn by this great tragedy. We express our outrage and condemnation of this ferocious act driven by enmity against resident doctors in Safdarjung hospital,” said Forda in a letter to the union home minister.

“Our main concern is the fathomable degree of the ruthlessness of the general population against doctors; vindictive and personal hatred for the medicos that is baseless and is propagating day by day among people,” stated the doctors' body.

“We have the highest appreciation for our colleagues who are defying such horrible working conditions. While condemning the assault in the strongest terms, we express our solidarity with the victims and urge the home minister and competent authorities to take immediate measures to apprehend the perpetrators of such heinous crimes and ensure that expeditious justice is meted out to them as per the law,” explained Forda.

The doctors' body has requested the home minister to transfer the concerned DCP for failing to act and safeguard lives of doctors, security personnel and patients dependent on medical care. “A high level enquiry should be conducted to establish dereliction of duty by the concerned police officer and for letting the heinous crime happen,” said the doctors.

Dr Manish Nigam, President, Forda, said that the police booked two marshals and four guards who were just doing their duty of saving doctors from attacks. “They (mob) came with sticks. Why did they bring the sticks? They were doing gundagardi. But the police booked security guards and marshals. Therefore, we have sought action against the DCP for inaction,” he added.
