AIIMS docs write to PM Modi for salary hike

The Resident Doctors Association of Delhi-AIIMS has sought Prime Minister Narendera Modi’s intervention in hiking the salary of assistant professors who are working on contractual basis and being paid ‘less’ than resident doctors.
In a letter to PM Modi, the RDA has said: “The current salary for assistant professors is Rs 100,000 per month. Sir you would be surprised to know that the salary they draw is actually much lower than the resident doctors who get trained under them (around Rs 1,20,000 per month).”
The workload shared by a contractual member is by no means different from a regular faculty member employee at the institute. Moreover, most of them work out of their passion for academics and research.
“However, you would agree that 'Equal Work Deserves Equal Pay', and such discrimination would only deter young and promising candidates from joining the institute in future," reads the RDA letter.
“Precisely for this reason, many contractual faculty seats in the institute have remained vacant over the past few years. An individual has to take care of his family too, which becomes extremely difficult at this salary in a metro city like Delhi,” reads the letter.
The letter further says, “This institute has furnished a request to the health ministry in this regard. However, for unknown reasons, there has been no progress over the last 1-year. We are afraid that such reluctance would only lead to loss of potentially bright candidates from the institute to the private sector.”
“We urge you that if we really want to improve health system of our country, we should try to regularize the faculty appointments at 6-months’ interval or yearly basis at least and if there is any delay in process then there hould not be any discrimination, they should be given equal rights and salary,” added the doctors.
