70% Delhi Govt. school kids have gum disease: MAIDS report

A recent report conducted by the Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences (MAIDS), Delhi, on Delhi Govt. school children has revealed that 70% of children suffer from gum diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis.

The report, NEEV, which was conducted on 21,091 children studying in schools run by Delhi government, highlighted that 36% were found to have dental caries and 13% had malocclusion, a misalignment problem that can lead to serious oral health complications.

Children from 5 to 15 years of age were covered under the report, which was conducted in association with officials of School Health Scheme run by the Delhi government.

The report revealed that 70% out of 21,091 had gum disease while 0.2% children were found to have dental trauma/ injuries in teeth. The report was done in 12 government schools in five districts.

Dr Swati Jain, Consultant, Mobile Dental Clinic Project, MAIDS, told DTMT that the burden is huge and there is need for more treatment in schools.

“We need structured collaboration with schools to tackle the problem. We want inclusion of component of oral health formally in school health scheme. It will be beneficial for oral health of the children,” added Dr Jain.

Dr Jain said that 7500 out of 21,091 children have been screened and treated for their dental problems.

The goal of the report is to prevent and control diseases like tooth decay, gum diseases and irregular teeth, to control use of sugar, tobacco and other risk factors in oral diseases, to eliminate disparities in oral health among children and adolescents and to increase the state of oral health program capacity and effectiveness at the school level.
