Dr Pradip Kumar Sharma, 75, who has treated thousands of poor people without charging them a single paisa in Assam, has died after a battle with Covid-19.

He was undergoing treatment at the Assam Medical College Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh.

Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has confirmed the death of Dr Sharma, a senior private medical practitioner from Tinsukia, due to Covid-19 infection.

Earlier, Dr Jahan Iqbal Ahmed, associate professor in Ophthalmology department  at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital also died due to coronavirus.

Dr Sharma, an iconic figure of Tinsukia, had mild fever a couple of days and developed breathing problems following which he was shifted to AMCH on July 14.

He leaves behind his wife and a daughter.

Dr Sharma’s death created panic among his patients who visited him for medical consultation, both at his chamber -- Indu Pharmacy at Rongagora Road -- and in his residence at Gelapukhuri Road.
