NEW DELHI: People in Delhi have been advised by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) to wear the right air pollution masks to minimize the ill-effects of air pollution.

National president of IMA, Dr KK Aggarwal, has said, “Surgical or washable cloth masks are no protection against air pollution. Cloth masks are only marginally beneficial in protecting individuals from particles<2.5 μm.”

He said, “Compared with cloth masks, disposable surgical masks are more effective in reducing particulate exposure.”

Particulate respirators are also known as “air-purifying respirators” because they protect by filtering particles out of the air as you breathe.

Since airborne biological agents such as bacteria or viruses are particles, they can be filtered by particulate respirators.

Dr Aggarwal said, “The N-series respirators are commonly not resistant to oil and hence they provide protection against the solid and liquid aerosols that do not contain oil.”

Meanwhile, Dr Shaarang Sachdev, Consultant & Coordinator – Emergency, Dharamshila Narayana Superspeciality Hospital prescribed few precautionary measures to reduce the effect of air pollution such as maintaining good indoor air quality, wearing full sleeve clothes and covering your face with a good quality pollution mask, avoiding physical exercises outdoors, and consuming ginger and tulsi tea for stronger immune system etc.
