AIIMS provides free eye care, surgeries to underprivileged

Around eye 2000 surgeries of underprivileged people have been done in Delhi-AIIMS free of cost.

Delhi-AIIMS is operating as many as 25 vision centers in the Delhi-NCR area where over sixty thousand patients have already been screened with a view to offer eye treatment to underprivileged sections of society.

These vision centers are attached with various government health facilities.

Addressing the media on the occasion of the 51st Foundation Day of the RP Center at AIIMS-Delhi, Dr Praveen Vashist, Professor and Head Community Ophthalmology, RP Centre, informed that around sixty to seventy thousand patients have been screened for various eye diseases such as cataract and glaucoma.

“These centers have been set up in Faridabad, Gurugram, Ballabgarh, Ghaziabad, Jhajjhar and in dispensaries of Delhi government. Those who require surgeries are referred to Delhi-AIIMS. There surgeries have been conducted for free. We have thirty dedicated beds for such patients who are referred,” said Dr Vashist.

“It is not only the eyes but patients are also being screened for diabetic retinopathy and they are educated for preventive measures too. Around 2000 surgeries of underprivileged people have been done in Delhi-AIIMS. ASHA workers help in bringing patients to the vision centers,” added Dr Vashist.

Dr Atul Kumar, Chief and Professor, RP Centre, Delhi-AIIMS informed that glaucoma is the leading reason for blindness in India. Dr Kumar said that glaucoma silently blinds the person.

“Having healthy lifestyle, including looking at green sights and morning physical activities, are the need of the hour for good eye care. Controlling blood pressure and sugar level as well as regular check up of eyes can prevent various eye problems,” said Dr Kumar.

The AIIMS doctors also informed that adulterated colors that are used in Holi festival are highly toxic to the eye, skin, lungs and the environment. They have also been proven to be carcinogenic.
