In startling revelation, the UN has indicated that around 214 million women across the world do not use safe and effective family planning methods. Lack of awareness and services and lack support from partners and society are the major causes for not using safe and effective family planning methods, says the world agency.

Around forty per cent of women in India are not aware about family planning methods or they use unsafe ways for family planning.

July 11 was established as the World Population day in 1989 and this day is celebrated every year. This year, it will run on the theme of "Family Planning is a Human right”.

India's National Family Health Survey 2015-16 (NFHS-4) reveals that current use of family planning methods among married women (15-49 years) is 53.5%, and unmet need of family planning is 12.9%.

The UN says that it is all about choice of a woman as to how many children she wishes to have. In fact it is her human right.

The global agency says family planning is not just an important part of human rights, but works equally for women’s empowerment, reducing poverty and achieving sustainable development growth.

The world population has grown tremendously over the past years. Today, it stands at about 7.5 billion, growing at a fast pace, and is expected to reach 8.6 billion in 2030, adding 83 million people every year, according to UN report 2017.

India is the second most populated country in the world with nearly a fifth of the world’s population and is projected to be the world’s most populous country by 2022, surpassing China.
