Brain-dead gunshot victim's family donates her kidneys

NEW DELHI: Family of a gunshot victim, Archana Gupta, who was declared brain-dead following a bullet shot during “celebratory firing” in a Delhi farm house has donated her two kidneys.

Archana, a mother, an author and an architect, was with her family attending a night party when a bullet shot during struck her in the head. The victim was admitted at Fortis Flt. Lt. Rajan Dhall Hospital in Vasant Kunj where she was declared brain dead by doctors the following day.

Her family members came to terms with the situation and expressed their willingness for organ donation soon after. The procedure of organ retrieval was conducted by a team of doctors at Fortis Hospital in Vasant Kunj.

Mangla Dembi, Facility Director, Fortis Hospital, said, “As per data in 2015, there were 570 donations following brain death cases in the country, resulting in transplantation of a total of 1,675 organs including 1,007 kidneys, 510 livers, 110 hearts, 37 lungs, 4 pancreas and 2 small intestines.”

Dr Avnish Seth, Director, Fortis Organ Retrieval and Transplant, said, “These figures are not small numbers in India where, till a decade ago, organ donation was synonymous with the donation of a kidney or part of the liver from a living donor.”
