JAIPUR : Doctors at Fortis Escorts Hospital, Jaipur, recently performed a series of swap kidney transplants, conducted through laparoscopic procedures, a first in Rajasthan. All the 4 surgeries were completed within six hours by a team consisting of two surgeons, two nephrologist, four anesthetists and support staff.
Anil, 24, from Haryana, was suffering from chronic kidney failure that required an urgent transplant. Kanaram, 44, from Rajasthan, was suffering from high blood pressure that damaged his kidney with an urgent need for a transplant.
However, donors for both, mother of Mr Anil and wife of Mr Kanaram, failed to get a match.
Both the patients came to Fortis Escorts Hospital in Jaipur, where they saw a ray of hope for possible swap kidney transplants. After all due procedures and tests were completed, the hospital found out that both the patients were eligible for a kidney transplant.
“An expert team chose to perform this laparoscopy process and it took six hours to perform the surgery that was done at the same time on all four of them,” said Dr Sandeep Gupta, Additional Director, Kidney Transplant Surgery.
"Dr Ajay Singh, Nephrologist, Metro Hospital, who was treating Kanaram, found that his patient's wife couldn’t donate her kidney to her husband. He shared the case with many others, including me. Fortunately, we had the second family’s details in our records which matched the donor’s and recipient’s medical needs,” said Dr Gupta.
“This has been a unique and unprecedented opportunity for Indian medical fraternity to display its dexterity in sensitive procedures. The legacy of this hospital has been upheld by quick and meticulous solution provided by our competent team of doctors,” said Vivan Singh Gill, Zonal Director, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Jaipur, Rajasthan.
