80 children in Delhi start tobacco use everyday

Dr Parminder Sehgal, NSS Program Coordinator of Delhi University, says, “I was shocked to learn that more than 80 children in Delhi initiate tobacco use every day.”

Dr Sehgal was speaking at a ‘Pledge for Life --Tobacco Free Youth’ campaign to address the huge public health issues caused by tobacco consumption in Delhi University. He said, “Prevention is better than cure and we must ensure that youngsters refrain from any form of addiction. We all together will contribute to address this epidemic, which is killing 19000 Delhiites every year.”

Tobacco control workshops were conducted, where around 400 volunteers participated from these colleges. Highly motivated student volunteers pledged that they will never touch tobacco in their lives and will encourage their friends and families also not to do so.

Dr Saurabh Gupta, Cancer Surgeon from Max Hospital, said, “Tobacco is the single most preventable cause of death. Prevention activities in ‘Pledge for Life – Tobacco Free Youth’ campaign is the only answer to this public health issue.

He said, “Unfortunately, 50% of oral cancer patients who undergo surgery do not survive for more than a year. I am so glad that you all have taken up this cause as the priority because we as doctors can treat but you all can prevent these deaths.” The University has a total of 63 NSS Units with around 7500 volunteers. The Program Officers planned the anti-tobacco activities starting with making their own college campuses tobacco free.
