FLURAZEPAM

It is a class of Benzodiazepines in which slow imination of parent drug or active metabolite occurs. It produces an active metabolite which has a long t 1/2 and residual effects are likely to remain till next morning. Cumulation occurs on daily ingestion and is preferred in patients who have frequent nocturnal awakenings and in whom some day time sedation is acceptable. Mechanism of action is similar to Nitrazepam.

Indications

Chronic, short term & transient insomnia, anxiety.

Dosage

15-30 mg at bed time.

Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity, Myasthenia gravis, glaucoma.

Special Precautions

Impaired Cardio respiratory, renal, hepatic functions. Hypotension. Withdraw gradually, epilepsy, dependence. Paediatrics:Not recommended in age below 15 yrs. Pregnancy: Should not be used. Lactation: Use with caution. Elderly: Use with caution. Start with minimus dose.

Side Effects

Drowsiness, dizziness, Impaired performace, drug dependence, psychomotor side effects, blurred vision, urinary incontinence.

Drug Interactions

Potentiates CNS depressants.
