MECLIZINE

It is less sedative, less anticholinergic and long acting. Drug finds a valuable use in sea sickness, where it provides a long lasting action of nearly 24 hours. It also finds a place in treatment of vomiting of pregnancy.

Indications

Nausea, vomiting, Meniere’s syndrome, motion sickness, sea sickness, vertigo, chronic labyrinthitis.


Dosage

25-50 mg daily in dvided doses.


Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity.


Special Precautions

Drowsiness,sedation, impaired alertness, drive or operate heavy machinery. Glaucoma, epilepsy, prostatic hypertrophy.Liver disease.


Side Effects

Anticholinergic reactions like dry mouth, constipation, epigastric distress, G.I. upset. C.N.S. disturbances.


Drug Interactions

Potentiates CNS depressant action of alcohol, barbiturates hypnotics, opioid analgesics, sedatives and neurolepics. Antimuscarinic effect potentiated by MAOIs, atropine and tricyclic antidepressants.
