PROMETHAZINE THEOCLATE

It has been specially promoted as an antiemetic, but the action does not appear to be significantly different from Promethazine hydrochloride (Phenergan)

Indications

Nausea, vomiting, motion sickness.


Dosage

25 mg thrice daily. Motion sickness : 25mg 1- hrs before commencing journey.


Contra-Indications

Narrow angle glaucoma, epilepsy, concomitant therapy with MAO inhibitors, lactation.


Special Precautions

Drowsiness, should not drive or operate machinery. Prostatic hypertrophy, urinary retention. Paediatrics: Reduced dose necessary. Not recommended below the age of 2 years. Pregnancy: Should not be used. Lactation: Safety not established. Elderly: Dose should be reduced.


Side Effects

Blood disorders, C.N.S. and G.. effects. Anticholinergic reactions like dry mouth, constipation,G.I. upset, restlessness,blurred vision.


Drug Interactions

Antihistamines increases the risk of arrhythmias. Potentiates other CNS depressants like alcohol, sedatives, hypnotics, opioid analgesics and neuroleptics. Masks ototoxicity of aminoglycoside antibiotics.
