Butenafine HCL

It is a benzylamine derivative which acts by inhibiting the epoxidation of squalene, thus blocking the bio-synthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of fungal cell membranes. Depending on the concentration of the drug and fungal species tested, butenafine HCl may be fungicidal.

Indications

Topical treatment of the following superficial dermatophytoses : Tinea pedis, Tinea corporis, Tinea cruris due to E.floccosum, T.mentagraphytes, T.rubrum and T.tonsurans.


Dosage

Tinea pedis : should be applied twice daily for 7 days or once daily for 4 weeks. Tinea corporis or Tinea cruris : Should be applied once daily for 2 weeks


Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity.


Special Precautions

If irritation or sensitivity develops on application of butenafine cream 1%, treatment should be discontinued. Avoid contact with eyes, nose, mouth, and other mucous membranes. Use with caution in patients with known sensitivity to allylamine antifungals. Pregnancy : Used only if clearly indicated. Lactation : Use with caution.


Side Effects

Contact dermatitis, erythema, irritation, itching.
