Lincomycin

Lincomycin

It is fore runner of clindamycin; has similar antibacterial and toxic properties but is less potent and produces a higher incidence of diarrhoea and colitis.

Indications

Bronchitis, pneumonia, upper respiratory tract, skins and soft tissue infection. Otitis media, Osteomyelitis, Septic arthritis, Endocarditis, Septicaemia.


Dosage

Adults: 500mg 3-4 times daily. Children:30-60 mg/kg body wt daily in divided doses.


Contra-Indications

Neonates, hepatic, renal, endocrine or metabolic disorders. Hypersensitivity to lincomycin or clindamycin.


Special Precautions

History of G.I disorders as it can causes severe colitis. Paediatrics: Use with caution. Pregnancy: Contraindicated. Lactation: Contraindicated. Elderly: Use with caution.


Side Effects

Colitis, diarrhoea (discontinue immediately).


Drug Interactions

May potentiate neuromuscular blocking agents.Kaolin-Pectin prevents absorption.
