Pneumococcal vaccine

Pneumococcal vaccine is used for active immunisation against Strep. pneumoniae which is the most common cause of bacterial pneumonia worldwide. It is prepared from purified penumococcal capsular antigens and includes 23 serotypes which are responsible for atleast 85% of pneumococcal infections and has greater than 90% coverage against serotypes that are penicillin resistant.

Indications

Prevention of pneumococcal infections, particularly those of respiratory origin in all subjects over the age of 2 years who are at risk of serious pneumococcal infection.


Dosage

S.C. or I.M. route: First vaccination : A single injection confirs protection against pneumococcal types contained in the vaccine. Revaccination : Should not be carried before atleast 5 years, unless the subject is particularly exposed.


Contra-Indications

Safety during first trimester of pregnancy has not been established.


Special Precautions

Store between +20C to +80C. Do not freeze.


Side Effects

Possible reactions of hypersensitivity. Redness, slight pain and induration at the site of injection. Rarely fever may occur.
