Propantheline

It has been the most popular anti-cholinergic used for peptic ulcer. The higher ganglion blocking activity is believed to aid anti secretory effects & it relieves pain by anti spasmodic action also.

Indications

Peptic ulcer, gastritis, colitis.


Dosage

Peptic ulcer :- 15 mg, 3 times daily before meals & 30 mg at night Other indications : 15 mg 2-3 times daily.


Contra-Indications

Obstructive disease of G-I tract & intestinal, urinary atony, pregnancy, glaucoma, Myasthenia gravis. Toxic megacolon in ulcerative colitis. Hiatus hernia associated with reflux oesophagitis.


Special Precautions

Pyloric stenosis & where tachycardia is undesirable, severe cardiac disease. Renal or hepatic disease. Paediatrics: Not recommended. Pregnancy: Contraindicated. Lactation: Use with caution. Elderly: Reduced dose necessary.


Side Effects

Drowsiness, blurred vision. Rarely neuroleptic malignant syndrome.


Drug Interactions

Anticholinergic effect with tricyclic antidepressants, phenothiazines, disopyramide, Delayed gastric emptying causes delayed absorption of other drugs.
