SODIUM ALENDRONATE
Sodium alendronate, commonly known as alendronate, is a bisphosphonate medication used to treat and prevent bone loss. It works by inhibiting osteoclast activity, which reduces bone resorption and increases bone density. It is often prescribed for conditions such as osteoporosis in postmenopausal women, Paget's disease of bone, and other conditions that lead to bone weakening.-Treatment and prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. -Treatment of osteoporosis in men. -Treatment of glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis in both men and women. -Treatment of Paget's disease of bone.
-Osteoporosis: Typically, the recommended dose is 70 mg once weekly or 10 mg once daily. -Paget's Disease of Bone: The recommended dose is 40 mg once daily for 6 months. Dosage may vary depending on the patient's condition and should be determined by a healthcare provider. It is important to follow the prescribed dosing schedule and instructions.
-Hypersensitivity to alendronate or any other component of the medication. -Esophageal abnormalities such as stricture or achalasia, which may delay esophageal emptying. -Inability to sit or stand upright for at least 30 minutes. -Hypocalcemia (low calcium levels).
-Use caution in patients with gastrointestinal issues such as ulcers or gastritis. -Adequate calcium and vitamin D intake is essential for optimal treatment. -Monitor kidney function in patients with impaired renal function. -Discontinue use if severe esophageal irritation occurs. -Patients should remain upright for at least 30 minutes after taking the medication.
Common side effects include: -Gastrointestinal irritation (heartburn, esophagitis). -Abdominal pain. -Nausea. -Diarrhea. Less common but serious side effects include: -Osteonecrosis of the jaw (rare). -Severe musculoskeletal pain. -Atypical femur fractures (rare).
-Calcium supplements, antacids, or other medications containing divalent cations can interfere with the absorption of alendronate. -Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may increase the risk of gastrointestinal irritation.
