Tetracycline HCL

Tetracycline HCL is an antibiotic that belongs to the tetracycline class of drugs. It is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections by inhibiting the growth of bacteria. It is effective against a wide range of microorganisms including some gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, rickettsiae, chlamydiae, and mycoplasma.

Indications

Tetracycline HCL is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible strains of bacteria, including: -Respiratory tract infections -Urinary tract infections -Acne vulgaris -Chlamydia infections -Certain sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) -Some gastrointestinal infections -Rocky Mountain spotted fever and other rickettsial infections


Dosage

-The dosage of Tetracycline HCL may vary depending on the type and severity of infection and the age and weight of the patient. -For adults, the usual dose ranges from 500 mg to 2 g daily, divided into two to four doses. -For children, the dose is typically based on body weight. -It should be taken on an empty stomach, at least one hour before or two hours after meals.


Contra-Indications

-Known hypersensitivity to tetracyclines or any component of the formulation. -Patients with severe renal impairment. -Pregnant and nursing women, as it can cause permanent tooth discoloration and inhibit bone growth in the fetus or nursing infant. -Children under 8 years old due to the risk of permanent tooth discoloration.


Special Precautions

-Avoid exposure to sunlight or UV rays, as tetracyclines can increase photosensitivity. -Use with caution in patients with liver or kidney impairment. -May interfere with oral contraceptives, reducing their effectiveness. -Patients with a history of candidiasis (fungal infections) should be monitored, as tetracyclines can alter normal flora and lead to overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms.


Side Effects

Common side effects of Tetracycline HCL may include: -Gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea -Photosensitivity -Skin rash -Tooth discoloration in children -Alteration of normal flora leading to infections (e.g., oral or vaginal candidiasis) -Rarely, severe allergic reactions


Drug Interactions

-Antacids, calcium supplements, iron preparations, and dairy products may interfere with the absorption of tetracycline. -May increase the effect of anticoagulants such as warfarin. -Can reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives. -Should not be taken with other antibiotics that may also have similar adverse effects or interactions.
