Zanamivir

Zanamivir

Zanamivir inhibits Viral neuraminidase of influenza virus, thus altering virus particle aggregation and release. It is active against influenza A and B virus replication.

Indications

Influenza A and B


Dosage

Inhalation; 5mg - 10mg twice daily.


Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity


Special Precautions

Asthma and COPD aptients Paediatric : Safe Pregnancy: Category C. Use if risk to fetus outweighs benefits. Lactation: Not known if it is secreted in breast milk or not.


Side Effects

Headaches, diarrhea, nausea, cough, vomiting and dizziness. Sinusitis, ear, nose and throat infections may occur. Skin reactions, allergic reactions, bronchospasms and behavioral disturbances.


Drug Interactions

Avoid live attenuated influenza vaccine intranasal within 2wk before or 48hr after zanamivir.
