Breast cancer is beatable: Survivor
The combination of patience, timely diagnosis and treatment, willpower and support from family members can help in beating breast cancer and leading a quality of life, the breast cancer survivors said while sharing their journey battling the disease at Delhi-AIIMS.
The courage and counselling given by the AIIMS doctors have helped them in tackling the fear and anxiety of the disease, they asserted.
75-year-old Rachna (name changed) was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1997 said that the support she received from her treating doctors and family, helped her to beat the disease.
"It was a tough time, and I had lost hope, but my husband consoled me and persuaded me to get treatment, she said.
"When I came to AIIMS, I saw many women younger than me also suffering from breast cancer. The first thing that came to my mind was what will happen to their children and who will take care of them. At that point, my husband told me that people should take care of themselves and only then they can think about others," Rachna recalled.
Pointing out that there are ways of tackling problems, she added, "There are patients who lose hope and become sad and keep thinking about the future, but at the same time, there are others who keep fighting the disease bravely."
"Positive mindset and family support also play a pivotal role,” she further added.
While speaking to Drug Today Medical Times Dr Piyush Ranjan, Additional Professor, Department of Surgical Discipline, pointed out the main problem lies in ignoring symptoms like lumps in the breast that do not cause any pain.
“We advise self-examination of the breast. The timely diagnosis and treatment are key to tackling the menace,” Dr Ranjan added.
Regarding the detection of breast cancers, Dr Ranjan said that it can be diagnosed through mammography.
“It is an X-ray of the breast, performed for both screenings as well as diagnosing breast cancer. Screening mammography helps in the early identification of breast cancer,” he added.
“It can also be diagnosed through ultrasonography of the breast. It helps to distinguish between cysts (fluid-filled sacs) and solid masses and differentiate between the benign and cancerous tumour,” he added.
On biopsy, Dr Ranjan said that a sample of suspicious areas is removed using a thin hollow needle. This tissue is examined under the microscope for confirmation and grading of the tumour.
Elaborating on prevention, Dr Ranjan said that opting for healthy lifestyles comprising of a nutritious diet, following a daily routine of moderate exercises and examining the breast regularly remains the key to preventing breast cancers.
