SSKM doctors remove part of the right lung to save 6-month-old baby

Doctors of Kolkata’s SSKM Hospital removed the upper lobe of the right lung of a 6-month-old Jharkhand baby suffering from breathlessness since birth.

Quoting hospital authorities, the local media reported that the baby, Anya Khatun from Sahebganj in Jharkhand, was suffering from congenital pulmonary airway malformation.

According to the treating doctors, surgery is currently the only option in such cases, and in this case, the baby's lung was affected while she was still in the womb.

The doctors went on to say that such an occurrence is extremely rare, occurring in one in every 30,000 live births.

Five people got a new lease on life after the family members of a 54-year-old theatre activist decided to donate his organs after he was declared brain dead in Kolkata recently.

Dr Sujoy Pal of the department of surgery at SSKM said that the defective lobe was exerting pressure on the rest of the two lobes of the right lung along with the left lung, preventing them to function normally.

“There was no other option other than removing the affected lobe,” he said.

Though exact causes are yet to be discovered, the doctors said, they suspect genetic reasons behind such cases. In these conditions, the air sacs or alveoli of the lungs fail to develop normally, doctors say.

“In many cases, such babies die while still in the womb, while most of the cases get presented during the first year after birth,” Dr Pal said.
