Delhi-AIIMS to set up dedicated engineering yard to control air pollution

Delhi-AIIMS will set up an engineering yard by July 31, 2023 with an aim to have a separate place for marble cutting, wood cutting and grinding.

“Recognizing the inconvenience caused to patients, staff, and the deterioration of the clean environment at the institute, AIIMS Director Dr M Srinivas issued an OM to restrict marble cutting, wood cutting, grinding, and other construction repair and renovation activities to a specific site in trauma centre,” Dr Rima Dada, In-Charge, Media Cell, said in a statement issued on June 1, 2023.

“It would be designated as Engineering Yard and would be set up by July 31st 2023.  Repair and renovation works inconvenience patients and staff and cause considerable noise and dust pollution.

"All work related to repair renovation will be done in eEgineering Yard and transported to the construction site in a knockdown state for final assembly and installation,” the statement further read.

Dr Dada further stated that the engineering yard will be constructed as an all-weather facility with proper ventilation and will be equipped with basic amenities like drinking water and toilet facility.

The engineering department will ensure regular maintenance of the space, and if required, provisions for water and electricity will be made to facilitate the construction activities.

Dr Dada stated that Prof Srinivas has directed that all repair and renovation work should be completed within 15 days.

"To achieve this objective, engineering contracts will specify the minimum number of workers required for each project. Moreover, contractors will be encouraged to utilize modern tools, technology, and methods to expedite the construction process while minimizing dust and noise pollution. Strict adherence to safety protocols, including proper cordoning off of the engineering site and the implementation of measures to ensure the safety of staff, the public, and workers, will be mandatory," She stated.
