Reverse Pet Vending Machine installed at Mother & Child Block at AIIMS

World Environment Day: AIIMS installs three plastic bottle crusher machines

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, has collaborated with Indian Oil Corporation to instal three plastic bottle crushing machines to reduce plastic garbage in the hospital premises.

The machines, donated by Indian Oil Corporation, were installed at the cafe area, Mother and Child Block and hostel.

“This is a small initiative from the Indian Oil Corporation. We are doing more work as part of our CSR activities. Plastic is a versatile thing and it is our responsibility to handle it and do not throw it here and there. A total of 15 kg plastic bottles per hour can be recycled in one hour in one machine,” Mr Sujoy Choudhury, Director, Planning and Business Development, Indian Oil Corporation said.

Prof Neerja Bhatla, HoD, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Delhi-AIIMS, said, “World Environment Day reminds us that we have to maintain our environment for the upcoming generations. With each passing day, we observe that the environment is getting polluted."

“These machines will help in recycling plastic bottles. The recycled waste is being used to make uniforms, t-shirts and fabrics,” she added.

Dr Rima Dada, In-Charge, Media Cell, Delhi-AIIMS, emphasised, “We have per day footfall from twenty-five to thirty thousand patients and we also have a huge number of staff of AIIMS. Hence, a big plastic bottle waste is generated every day and these machines will help to recycle this waste. It has been seen that around 400 million tonnes of plastic waste is generated every year globally but less than 10% of it is recycled.”

“We also have to make sure to make people aware that they should not use single-use plastic and even if they do and if they do then they have to make sure it has proper disposal,” Dr Dada added.
