India’s Journey from Illness to Wellness: A Transformative Path
Bhubaneswar Kalita, Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare, emphasized India's transformative journey from illness to wellness at the 2nd Awareness Summit on Illness to Wellness organized by ASSOCHAM.
Reflecting on India's remarkable evolution in the health and hygiene domain, Kalita highlighted the nation's achievement in surpassing the WHO-recommended doctor to population ratio of 1:1000, boasting a ratio of 1:900. He underscored that investing in health and hygiene is not just a moral obligation but also an economic necessity.
Kalita stressed the pivotal role of health and hygiene as the foundation of prosperous societies, beyond mere buzzwords. He commended India's progress in combatting infectious diseases and embracing preventive healthcare, resulting in notable reductions in maternal, infant, and under-5 mortality rates over the past decade. Kalita credited robust healthcare initiatives and the government's emphasis on hygiene practices for these achievements, asserting that India is now a health-conscious society.
Looking ahead, Kalita emphasized the importance of universal health coverage and community empowerment in safeguarding wellbeing. He highlighted the government's efforts to address the shortage of doctors in rural areas by increasing the number of medical colleges, aiming to establish one medical college in every district.
Mr. Anil Rajput, Chairperson of ASSOCHAM National CSR Council, outlined the organization's commitment to promoting health and wellness since 2014. He emphasized their focus on empowerment, education, collaboration, and sustainable impact through various initiatives, including camps, awareness campaigns, and webinars.
In his keynote address, (Padma Bhushan) Dr. Ashok Seth, Chairman of Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, emphasized the transition from illness to wellness as essential for a new India. He emphasized the importance of combining efforts to deliver wellness, highlighting the role of youth and women in shaping the country's future. Dr. Seth underscored the need to integrate science with spirituality in the 21st century, emphasizing the importance of mental health and empowerment.
Prof. (Dr.) Anil Agarwal, Medical Director of Govind Ballabh Pant Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education Research, stressed the significance of public awareness and early detection in combating diseases. He advocated for disseminating accurate information and targeting vulnerable groups, emphasizing the importance of imparting life-saving skills to students in schools and colleges.
