FDA Issues Warning on Hazardous Inhalants Marketed for Alertness

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning against purchasing or using certain inhalants marketed to enhance alertness and boost energy. These products, primarily containing ammonia, pose serious health risks.

Inhaling ammonia can lead to immediate health issues such as coughing, airway constriction, and irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat. The FDA has reported multiple adverse events linked to these inhalants, including shortness of breath, seizures, migraines, vomiting, diarrhea, and fainting. Many of these products may be found on various websites.

The FDA notes that manufacturers of these inhalants have failed to prove their safety or effectiveness for the claims they make. The agency warns that failure to address these violations promptly could lead to legal actions, including product seizures and injunctions.

In May 2023, the FDA specifically cautioned against the use of Nose Slap and Soul Slap products, which are also included in this latest alert. Health care professionals and consumers are encouraged to report any adverse events or quality issues with these or similar products to the FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program.
