68-Year-Old Man Beats Advanced Prostate Cancer After Complex Robotic Surgery at RG Hospitals Delhi
Doctors at RG Hospitals, Delhi have successfully performed a highly complex robotic surgery on a 68-year-old man suffering from advanced prostate cancer, helping him recover well despite multiple medical challenges.
The patient was admitted with severe urinary problems, including poor urine flow and other lower urinary tract symptoms. Detailed investigations revealed that he had locally advanced prostate cancer with a significantly enlarged prostate weighing nearly 90 grams.
The cancer had also spread to the seminal vesicles. PET-CT scans and biopsy confirmed prostate cancer with a Gleason score of 4+3 (Grade Group 3). The case became even more challenging as the patient was also suffering from severe anaemia and diabetes.
A multidisciplinary team led by Dr. Susheel Kharbanda, Senior Consultant – Urology, and Dr. Prerit Mathur, Senior Consultant – Anaesthesia, carried out a robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy along with bilateral iliac lymph node dissection under general anaesthesia.
Using robotic technology, the surgeons were able to remove the cancerous prostate and affected lymph nodes with high precision while preserving surrounding vital structures as much as medically possible. Despite the advanced stage of the disease and the enlarged prostate, the surgery was completed successfully.
The patient's post-operative biopsy brought encouraging news. Both the surgical margins and lymph nodes were found to be free of cancer, indicating successful removal of the disease. He recovered steadily after surgery and was discharged in stable condition.
Speaking about the procedure, Dr. Susheel Kharbanda said that treating locally advanced prostate cancer becomes particularly difficult when the prostate is significantly enlarged and the seminal vesicles are involved. He said robotic-assisted surgery provided better vision and greater precision, which proved crucial in managing such a complex case. He added that the negative surgical margins and lymph node findings, along with the patient's smooth recovery, were highly encouraging.
Dr. Prerit Mathur said the patient's severe anaemia, diabetes and the long duration of surgery required meticulous planning before and during the operation. According to him, maintaining stable blood circulation throughout the procedure was critical, and the close coordination between the surgical, anaesthesia and critical care teams played a key role in ensuring a safe surgery and successful recovery.
The hospital said the case highlights the growing role of robotic-assisted surgery in treating complex urological cancers. Doctors noted that robotic technology is helping improve surgical precision, minimise complications and support faster recovery, particularly in patients with advanced prostate cancer and multiple health conditions.
