AI in Healthcare: India’s Digital Revolution in Ayurveda and Traditional Medicine
When people talk about AI in healthcare, the conversation usually revolves around robotics, hospital diagnostics, or drug discovery. But in India, artificial intelligence is now entering an entirely different domain — Ayurveda and other traditional systems of medicine. This marks not just a technological upgrade but a cultural evolution, as the country begins to merge its ancient healing systems with cutting-edge data science and quantum physics.
At the heart of this transformation lies a single, ambitious idea — to make traditional Indian medicine more evidence-based, standardised, and globally credible. From government-backed digital repositories to private-sector quantum-engineered botanicals, a quiet revolution is underway to modernise Ayusha (Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homoeopathy) through AI-driven research and innovation.
Government Initiative: DRAVYA — The Digital Soul of Ayurveda
The Ministry of Ayush has taken a pioneering step with the launch of DRAVYA—the Digitised Retrieval Application for Versatile Yardstick of Ayush. Developed by the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), DRAVYA serves as a comprehensive digital repository of medicinal substances drawn from both classical Ayurvedic texts and modern research databases.
In its first phase, DRAVYA catalogues 100 key medicinal substances, with data on pharmacology, chemistry, botany, and safety profiles. It also features QR code integration, allowing real-time access to standardised information across medicinal plant gardens and repositories nationwide. What makes DRAVYA remarkable is that it is AI-ready — designed to eventually interlink with the Ayush Grid and other research databases for pattern recognition, data mining, and cross-disciplinary studies.
Union Ayush Minister Shri Prataprao Jadhav described DRAVYA as “more than a digital archive—it is the living embodiment of India’s knowledge tradition in a contemporary form.” His words reflect a broader vision: that artificial intelligence can help preserve, verify, and globalise India’s healing heritage.
According to Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary, Ministry of Ayush, the platform will “empower the scientific community and policymakers alike, serving as a credible, technology-driven resource for global collaboration.” The portal thus represents a foundational shift — moving Ayurveda from the realm of intuition to the realm of information.
Global Context: Aligning with the WHO’s Traditional Medicine Strategy
India’s digital modernisation of Ayurveda aligns closely with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Traditional Medicine Strategy 2014–2023, which encourages countries to integrate traditional medicine into their health systems through research, regulation, and evidence-based practice.
The WHO strategy highlights four pillars—policy integration, safety and quality, access, and rational use. It urges member states to build knowledge systems that ensure traditional medicine is used safely, effectively, and ethically. However, many countries still struggle with issues such as quality control, practitioner regulation, and data validation.
This is where AI in healthcare becomes critical. Artificial intelligence can analyse large datasets of traditional medicine formulations, predict molecular interactions, and assess potential side effects — processes that once relied solely on anecdotal evidence. In India, initiatives like DRAVYA and the Ayush Grid are helping to close this gap by digitising centuries of herbal wisdom into structured, searchable scientific data.
By embracing AI, India is not only following global best practices but also contributing new models for how traditional medicine can coexist with modern science.
Private Sector Innovation: The Quantum Leap of Greenspace Herbs
While government initiatives build the digital foundation, India’s private innovators are pushing the scientific boundaries of Ayurveda. One of the most notable examples is Greenspace Herbs, a Bengaluru-based company that has developed a proprietary technology called AYURQUANTA 6.
This process combines AI, quantum physics, and spectroscopy to “engineer” the energetic states of herbs — enhancing their consistency, potency, and bioavailability. Using AI-powered computational modelling, spectral mapping, and resonance matching, the company claims it can standardise Ayurvedic botanicals without altering their natural chemistry.
Director Shafiulla Nuruddin Hirehal explains, “Ayurvedic ingredients have been judged by inconsistent standards for too long. We’re not just asking the world to trust ancient wisdom — we’re giving it the scientific language and proof it needs.”
The company’s innovation is attracting international attention. Greenspace recently announced its entry into South Korea’s $5 billion health functional food market, one of the world’s most tightly regulated supplement sectors. Their goal is to demonstrate that Ayurveda engineered with quantum science can meet—and even exceed—the world’s most stringent quality standards.
While the idea of “Quantum Ayurveda” may sound futuristic, it represents a continuation of Ayurveda’s original philosophy—the balance of energies in the human body. Only now are those energies being measured and validated through data analytics, spectroscopy, and AI-driven simulation.
Tradition Meets Technology
The fusion of AI and Ayurveda raises both promise and responsibility. For India, it represents a shift from being a supplier of herbal raw materials to becoming a global innovation hub in natural medicine. For scientists, it offers a chance to re-examine ancient formulations through measurable parameters.
However, experts caution that technological enthusiasm must be matched with scientific rigour. Independent validation, ethical data handling, and patient safety remain essential. The ultimate success of AI in healthcare — especially in traditional systems — will depend on transparency, reproducibility, and regulation.
Yet the direction is unmistakable. By integrating AI into traditional medicine, India is redefining what evidence-based healthcare can look like in the 21st century. From the DRAVYA portal’s data architecture to Greenspace’s quantum-engineered botanicals, a new model of innovation is taking root — one where heritage meets high-tech.
As one expert observed during the Ayurveda Day 2025 event in Goa, “When India digitises its traditions, it doesn’t lose them—it strengthens them.”
