AIIMS Delhi and Partners Distribute Smart Vision Glasses to Help Children See the World with Confidence

In a major step towards inclusive healthcare and technology-driven support, AI-powered smart vision glasses were distributed to visually impaired children in New Delhi, giving many of them a new sense of confidence and independence.

Despite major improvements in eye care services across India, visual impairment continues to affect lakhs of people. Experts estimate that nearly 7 lakh Indians are living with irreversible blindness or severe visual impairment. Beyond health challenges, vision loss often impacts education, mobility, employment opportunities, and emotional well-being.

To help bridge this gap, Dr. R.P. Centre at AIIMS New Delhi, in collaboration with Rotary District 3012, SHG, and VISION-AID, organized a special distribution program for AI-powered Smart Vision Glasses.

These smart wearable devices use advanced artificial intelligence and computer vision technology to assist visually impaired users in their everyday lives. The glasses can read printed text aloud, recognize faces and objects, detect obstacles, support navigation, and even provide emergency assistance through real-time audio guidance.

The initiative aims to make daily activities easier and safer while helping users become more independent and socially connected.

Speaking at the event, Prof. Radhika Tandon, Chief Professor and Officer In-charge of Community Ophthalmology at Dr. R.P. Centre, AIIMS New Delhi, said that AI-enabled assistive technology is becoming an important support system for people with visual disabilities.

“Smart vision glasses can reduce dependency and improve confidence in education, employment, and daily life,” she said. She also added that feedback from children using the devices will help experts further improve the technology and make it more user-friendly.

Prof. Dr. Praveen Vashist, Professor and Officer-in-Charge of Community Ophthalmology, shared that 53 beneficiaries had already received the smart glasses in January 2026. Now, another 40 visually impaired children have been added to the program.

He further revealed that nearly 1,500 visually impaired children from schools for the blind across Delhi-NCR have been registered under the initiative so far.

Highlighting the growing role of technology in rehabilitation, Prof. Tanuj Dada, Head of Glaucoma Services at Dr. R.P. Centre, stressed the importance of innovative solutions to improve functional vision and quality of life for people with irreversible blindness.

Dr. Amita Mohindru, District Governor of Rotary International District 3012, described the initiative as a meaningful effort to combine community support with modern technology.

“This program is helping visually impaired individuals live with greater dignity and independence. With continued partnerships and support, we hope to reach many more beneficiaries in the future,” she said.

Organizers also reaffirmed their commitment to expanding the initiative and ensuring that no visually impaired child is left behind in accessing life-changing assistive technology.
