AIIMS Delhi has taken a major leap in cancer care by launching an advanced robotic-assisted surgery program at the Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar Institute Rotary Cancer Hospital (IRCH). The department has installed the state-of-the-art da Vinci surgical system, marking a milestone in delivering high-precision, minimally invasive cancer surgery to patients—completely free of cost.

During its pilot phase, the department successfully performed around 100 robotic surgeries, reflecting both patient demand and growing clinical confidence in the technology. The program is designed to handle complex cancers involving the rectum, esophagus, pancreas, urology, and gynecologic organs, where precision and careful tissue handling are crucial.

Procedures such as very low rectal surgeries, Whipple’s operations for pancreatic cancer, and advanced chest procedures can now be performed with greater accuracy, fewer complications, and faster recovery times.

Dr. M. Srinivas, Director of AIIMS Delhi, highlighted the significance of this development: “The introduction of robotic-assisted surgery demonstrates AIIMS Delhi’s commitment to equitable access to advanced healthcare. With cancer cases rising across the country, precision-driven treatments are no longer a luxury—they are a necessity. By offering these surgeries free of cost, we are removing financial barriers and ensuring that life-saving, high-tech care reaches all sections of society.”

Dr. Sunil Kumar, Head of Surgical Oncology at IRCH, explained the benefits for both patients and surgeons. “Robotic-assisted surgery is transforming complex cancer care. Patients benefit from smaller incisions, reduced blood loss, less pain, quicker recovery, and fewer complications, while surgeons gain enhanced visibility, control, and precision. This program positions AIIMS Delhi as a benchmark for cutting-edge oncology surgery in the public sector, widening access for patients nationwide.”

Looking ahead, the department plans to document surgical outcomes, contribute to research, and share insights with the broader surgical community. With high patient volumes and advanced technology, AIIMS Delhi aims to generate valuable evidence that could shape best practices in cancer surgery across India.
