Air Pollution Linked to Rising Stroke and Cardiovascular Risks, Experts Warn

As India continues to battle dangerously high pollution levels, emerging evidence is strengthening the link between air pollution and serious cardiovascular and neurological disorders. While past research on particulate matter exposure has largely come from regions with relatively low pollution, scientists say data from heavily polluted countries like India is urgently needed — especially as non-communicable diseases continue to rise.


Health experts note that tiny particulate matter, particularly PM2.5, poses a major threat. These microscopic particles penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream, damaging blood vessels and raising blood pressure. Such long-term exposure is now believed to significantly contribute to the growing prevalence of heart disease, stroke, and metabolic disorders.

"Neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, are also emerging as potential long-term consequences of chronic exposure," Dr. (Prof.) P. N. Renjen, Sr. Consultant Neurologist (Stroke), Institute of Neurosciences, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, said. 

While short-term pollution spikes may not immediately trigger these conditions, experts warn that persistent exposure can reduce oxygenation to the brain, leading to neuropathy and other degenerative changes over time.

"Stroke, in particular, has been closely linked to worsening air quality. Several studies have associated pollutants such as carbon monoxide, ozone, nitrogen dioxide, and sulfur dioxide with increased stroke risk. It is believed that changes in hemodynamic and hemostatic factors, along with disturbances in the autonomic nervous system, may underlie these pollution-driven cardiovascular effects. With stroke predicted to become one of the world’s leading causes of death, the role of environmental pollution is coming under sharper focus," Prof Renjen added. 

The convergence of climate change, poverty, and pollution further complicates the crisis. For years, low-income conditions and climate-related threats have been treated as separate issues, but experts stress they are deeply interconnected — and must be addressed together.

Public health specialists are urging immediate steps to reduce exposure. Limiting the use of emission-heavy transportation, especially private vehicles, is seen as a crucial measure to curb PM2.5 levels. During periods of extreme pollution, doctors recommend wearing certified masks and avoiding strenuous outdoor activities, particularly in early mornings when pollution tends to peak. Indoor alternatives such as yoga and breathing exercises can help maintain fitness without increasing inhalation of toxic air.

As scientific evidence grows, the message is clear: India’s air pollution crisis is no longer just an environmental issue — it is a severe and escalating public health emergency. Addressing it requires coordinated action, from reducing emissions to improving public awareness and strengthening long-term health surveillance.
