Akums Drugs & Pharmaceuticals Ltd. has announced the launch of what it describes as the world’s first dispersible formulation of the anti-migraine drug Lasmiditan, marking a significant development in the treatment of acute migraine attacks.

The formulation, approved by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI), aims to offer a more patient-friendly option for individuals suffering from sudden and often debilitating migraine episodes. Designed to dissolve in a small amount of water, the dispersible tablets provide an alternative for patients who struggle to swallow conventional pills during attacks.

Migraine remains one of the most widespread neurological conditions globally, affecting over one billion people. The disorder is characterised by recurring episodes of intense, often one-sided headaches accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. Despite its prevalence, migraine continues to be underdiagnosed and inadequately treated in many regions.

Akums’ new formulation seeks to address several challenges commonly faced by patients during migraine episodes, particularly gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, which can hinder the intake of traditional oral medications. The dispersible tablet format allows for easier administration, potentially improving patient adherence during acute attacks.

According to the company, the tablets are engineered with a dual disintegration mechanism involving swelling and effervescence, enabling rapid dispersion and quicker onset of therapeutic action. Additionally, a taste-masking technology has been incorporated to counter the naturally bitter profile of Lasmiditan, enhancing palatability.

Lasmiditan belongs to a class of drugs known as ‘ditans’ and works as a selective serotonin 5-HT1F receptor agonist. Unlike some older migraine treatments, it acts directly on neural pathways associated with migraine without causing vasoconstriction. The drug is indicated for the acute treatment of migraine with or without aura in adults and is not intended for preventive use.

Commenting on the launch, Arushi Jain said the innovation was designed with patient needs in mind. “Migraine attacks can be sudden and severely disruptive. Patients require solutions that are not only effective but also easy to use in challenging moments. This formulation disperses quickly in water, making it especially useful when nausea or difficulty swallowing limits the use of conventional tablets,” she noted.

Industry observers view the development as a step forward in patient-centric drug delivery, combining targeted pharmacological action with ease of administration. The company said the launch reflects its broader focus on innovation-driven pharmaceutical solutions supported by advanced manufacturing and research capabilities.

The introduction of dispersible Lasmiditan tablets could potentially improve accessibility and compliance in migraine treatment, particularly for patients who experience severe symptoms during acute episodes.
