In a groundbreaking achievement for healthcare in Kerala, Aster MIMS Calicut has successfully performed the state’s first Fetal Balloon Aortic Valvotomy—a rare and life-saving heart procedure on a six-month-old fetus. This marks India’s fifth such procedure, setting a new benchmark in the field of pediatric cardiology.

The story began when Muhsina, a 25-year-old mother-to-be, went for a routine scan at another hospital and discovered that her unborn baby had a severely narrowed aortic valve. This condition was dangerously reducing the heart’s ability to pump blood efficiently, putting the baby’s life at immediate risk. After learning about the severity of the situation, Muhsina and her husband reached out to Dr. Renu P. Kurup, a leading Paediatric Cardiologist at Aster MIMS Calicut, in search of advanced medical intervention.

After a thorough evaluation, Dr. Kurup recommended the Fetal Balloon Aortic Valvotomy, a complex procedure that had only been performed four times previously in India. However, due to the fetus’s initial positioning, the procedure had to be postponed.

Three days later, when the fetus was in an optimal position, the medical team, including both the mother and baby, was ready for the delicate procedure. With anesthesia administered to both, the procedure was successfully carried out, and both mother and child remained stable under careful post-operative observation.

Dr. Kurup, reflecting on the complexity of the procedure, said, "This intervention was our only chance to save the baby. It was a high-risk case, but the family’s determination and the hospital’s advanced facilities made it possible."

A few months later, Muhsina gave birth to a healthy baby, and another crucial procedure—Post-Natal Balloon Aortic Valvotomy—was performed on the newborn, which was also successful. Overwhelmed with gratitude, Muhsina said, “The reason behind my baby’s healthy smile is the grace of God and the care and support we received at Aster MIMS Calicut.”
