Ayushman Bharat Cover May Double to ₹10 Lakh, Boosting Relief for Patients and Senior Citizens

The Parliamentary Standing Committee's recommendation to increase the Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY health insurance cover from ₹5 lakh to ₹10 lakh has received strong support from the healthcare industry. Experts say the move could provide much-needed financial relief to families struggling with the rising cost of medical treatment.

Reacting to the proposal, Pavan Choudary, Chairman of the Medical Technology Association of India (MTaI), said the recommendation comes at the right time as healthcare expenses, especially for complex diseases, have increased sharply in recent years. He said stronger financial protection is essential to ensure that serious illnesses do not push families into financial crisis.

Choudary highlighted that the recommendation would be particularly beneficial for senior citizens. He noted that Ayushman Bharat has already helped millions of elderly people access quality healthcare with dignity while reducing their financial dependence on family members. Increasing the insurance cover, he said, acknowledges the growing healthcare needs of India's ageing population and reflects the country's responsibility towards them.

He also stressed that raising the insurance limit is more than just expanding health coverage. According to him, the move would improve access to advanced diagnostic services, modern medical technologies and better-quality treatment. It would also encourage greater participation from hospitals under the Ayushman Bharat scheme while driving fresh investments in India's medical technology and pharmaceutical sectors.
