Breaking the Silence on Periods: Free Sanitary Pads, Awareness Drive at Anand Vihar Namo Bharat Station
In a vibrant initiative to spark conversations around menstrual health and hygiene, a two-day awareness campaign was organised at Anand Vihar Namo Bharat Station as part of celebrations for the 115th edition of International Women’s Day. The campaign aimed to educate women commuters about safe menstrual practices while challenging long-standing taboos surrounding periods.
The outreach programme, held on March 7 and 8, was organised by feminine hygiene brand everteen in collaboration with the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), which operates the Namo Bharat Rapid Rail network.
At the heart of the campaign was Rajwinder Kaur, representing everteen, who personally interacted with women passengers at the station, distributing sanitary pads free of cost and guiding them on menstrual hygiene and the importance of understanding their menstrual cycle.
“Menstrual health should never be a topic of hesitation. Through this initiative we want women and young girls to feel confident talking about periods and adopting healthy hygiene practices,” said Rajwinder Kaur while engaging with commuters during the drive.
Passengers passing through the station were invited to take part in interactive awareness sessions where trained representatives explained the basics of menstrual hygiene, cycle tracking and the importance of using safe sanitary products. Hygiene kits were distributed among women commuters, each containing sanitary pads and a period calendar to help women track their menstrual cycle more effectively.
The kits also featured a specially designed period tracker aimed at helping women monitor their cycle days, ovulation window and fertility period. Informative flyers on personal hygiene and self-care were handed out to commuters, particularly adolescent girls, encouraging them to adopt healthy menstrual practices.
To make the campaign more engaging, organisers installed a photo booth inside the station where commuters could participate and share their support for women’s health awareness on social media using hashtags such as #IWDwithNCRTCandEverteen and #CelebrateWomen.
Information kiosks were also set up near the boarding areas to reach more passengers, while public announcements across the station invited commuters to participate in the awareness activities. Adding another interactive dimension, trained team members boarded the women’s coach of the rapid rail to conduct an “awareness drive on the go,” holding live discussions with passengers during the journey.
The campaign reflects the broader vision of strengthening women’s participation and empowerment within public transport systems. During the launch of the Namo Bharat Rapid Rail, Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, had highlighted that the rapid rail network has become a symbol of women’s empowerment, with women actively involved in operating trains, managing station control rooms and handling key operational roles.
Operated by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation, the Namo Bharat Rapid Rail is India’s first regional rapid transit system designed to improve connectivity and promote sustainable urban development across the National Capital Region.
With dedicated coaches for women travellers and initiatives like this menstrual health campaign, the rapid rail network is also emerging as a platform for promoting awareness on important social and health issues—ensuring that public spaces become safer, more inclusive and more informed for women commuters.
