Imagine walking into a hospital toilet and looking up — only to see part of the ceiling hanging loose above your head. That’s exactly what visitors and staff at Gautam Buddh Nagar District Hospital are facing on the eighth floor, where a broken ceiling in the male toilet has turned a basic facility into a serious safety hazard.

This isn’t some forgotten corner of the building. The toilet is located just a few steps away from the office of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) — the very person responsible for ensuring hospital standards and safety. Yet, the damaged ceiling remains unrepaired, leaving anyone who dares to enter at risk of falling debris.

“It’s honestly scary,” said one hospital staff member, hesitant to be named. “The ceiling has already collapsed once. Every time someone walks in, they look up first, just to make sure nothing else is about to fall.”

Patients and attendants, already under stress, say the sight of such neglect inside a government hospital is shocking. For them, this isn’t just about broken plaster — it’s about broken trust in a place that’s supposed to heal, not harm.

The irony couldn’t be stronger. Outside, the hospital’s building looks modern and impressive. But one step inside, and it tells a completely different story — one of neglect, poor maintenance, and indifference.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has repeatedly spoken about cleanliness, hygiene, and safety being non-negotiable in Uttar Pradesh’s public institutions. 

But what does it say when a toilet right next to the CMO’s office is left in such a dangerous state?

Hospitals should be sanctuaries of care and cleanliness — not places where people worry about ceilings falling on their heads. The situation calls for immediate repair, accountability, and perhaps a reality check on how seriously hospital management takes safety in its own corridors.
