In an important step toward raising awareness about rare diseases and improving patient care, a “Care for Rare” sensitisation workshop was recently organised at the Mother and Child Hospital (SDN Hospital). The programme brought together leading medical experts and researchers to discuss advancements in genetic screening, emerging therapies and better management strategies for patients affected by rare disorders.

The workshop served as a platform for specialists from some of India’s most prominent healthcare and academic institutions to exchange knowledge and highlight the growing importance of early diagnosis in tackling rare diseases.

The event was attended by Prof. B. L. Chaudhary, Medical Director of Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital, who joined the programme as the Chief Guest. Dr. Narottam Das was present as the Guest of Honour.

The workshop was organised by Prof. Seema Kapoor, former Director of Chacha Nehru Bal Chikitsalaya, with the objective of sensitising medical professionals about the importance of early diagnosis, genetic screening and the latest treatment approaches available for rare diseases.

Experts from several premier institutions participated in the discussions, including Maulana Azad Medical College, All India Institute of Medical Sciences Delhi, Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital, Agilus Diagnostics, Jamia Millia Islamia, and G. B. Pant Hospital.

During the deliberations, speakers highlighted that timely genetic screening plays a crucial role in identifying rare diseases at an early stage, enabling doctors to begin treatment before complications become severe. They also pointed out that rapid advancements in molecular diagnostics and targeted therapies are gradually expanding treatment possibilities for patients living with rare disorders.

Medical experts stressed that continuous training of healthcare professionals and greater awareness within the medical community are essential for improving the diagnosis, management and long-term care of patients affected by rare diseases.

The workshop ultimately provided a valuable opportunity for doctors, researchers and healthcare professionals to collaborate and share expertise, strengthening collective efforts toward better detection and treatment of rare diseases in the country.
