“Find it at Stage 1, and a patient has a 95% chance of recovery. That’s the golden window,” said Paskal. But with each stage, that window slams shut a little more. By Stage 2, odds fall to about 80%. At Stage 3, they’re down to 50-60%. And by Stage 4? The chance of recovery drops to a daunting 20%.

“The difference between Stage 1 and Stage 4 is the difference between hope and a heartbreaking battle,” he explained to villagers and health workers gathered at the camp. “That’s why waiting for symptoms is a gamble we cannot afford.”
