Common Preservative Found Behind Rising Deaths: Research

A common food preservative, sodium nitrite, is now at the centre of a troubling rise in suicide-related deaths across the UK, according to a new analysis published in BMJ Public Health. The study, covering 2019 to 2024, highlights a sharp increase in cases—particularly among young people and men—raising urgent questions about regulation, online access, and public health response.

Researchers examined 201 suspected poisoning cases submitted by coroners, forensic pathologists, and police. Of the 164 cases analysed in detail, the average age was just 28. Strikingly, 71% of those affected belonged to younger generations, including Gen Z and Millennials. Men accounted for a significant majority—109 cases compared to 52 among women.

Laboratory findings revealed that in 87% of cases, nitrite and nitrate levels in blood samples were up to 100 times higher than normal physiological levels. This strongly suggests deliberate ingestion rather than accidental exposure. Yet researchers warn the actual scale may be far larger, as toxicology testing for these compounds is not routinely mandated in all suspected suicides.

The timing of this rise has alarmed experts. Suicide rates in the UK had been declining since the 1990s, but recent years show a reversal—coinciding with growing global reports of deaths linked to sodium nitrite. The study points to a disturbing factor: the role of the internet. Easily accessible online forums and content—sometimes disguised as “support”—are providing detailed information on how to obtain and use the chemical.

Lead researcher Amrita Ahluwalia called the findings “deeply upsetting” and warned of the consequences of unchecked access. “This trend reflects how digital literacy can be misused, enabling exposure to harmful material at scale,” she said.

The researchers are calling for tighter legislation to regulate both the sale of sodium nitrite and the spread of related online content. In parallel, they suggest immediate harm-reduction steps—such as equipping ambulances with antidote kits containing methylthioninium chloride—which could save lives in emergency situations.

While the study acknowledges data limitations, its conclusion is stark: a widely available household chemical, combined with digital exposure, is quietly reshaping patterns of suicide. Without swift intervention, researchers warn, more preventable deaths may follow.
