CSIR–NIIST’s Lab-to-Market Push Targets India’s Lifestyle Disease Crisis

Indian's usual plate of rice and a sprinkling of salt could soon double as preventive medicine. In a significant public health development, the CSIR-National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology unveiled a high-protein, low-glycaemic index rice designed for diabetics and a low-sodium salt designed to combat hypertension, ushering in a decisive shift from laboratory research to supermarket-ready products. 

At the "CSIR-NIIST Tech Connect: Lab to Market" event at the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research Headquarters in New Delhi, 11 technologies were transferred to industrial partners and a Memorandum of Understanding was signed. The programme represents an institutional shift toward what authorities call innovation-led, market-aligned research. 

India has one of the world's highest rates of diabetes and high blood pressure. 

Polished white rice, which is a common food in Indian homes, has a high Glycaemic Index (GI), which is a way to measure how quickly a diet raises blood sugar levels. Foods with a high GI release sugar into the blood quickly, which makes blood sugar levels rise swiftly. Surges over time make it harder for the body to respond to insulin, which makes it harder to keep diabetes under control. 

The new type of rice solves this problem by lowering the glycaemic index, which lets sugar be released slowly and steadily. In short, it keeps blood sugar from rising too quickly after meals. Scientists have also added iron, folic acid, and vitamin B12 to the rice. These are micronutrients that are important for preventing anaemia, which is a common problem in India, while retaining the taste intact, which is often needed for it to be widely used.

Addressing the audience, Dr N. Kalaiselvi, Director General of CSIR and Secretary, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, stated that the organisation is transitioning from "conventional R&D to R&D innovation", in which research begins with market needs and works backwards to produce scalable solutions. She stressed that laboratories should not only focus on discovery but also on validation, monetisation, and measurable societal benefit. 

Hypertension, known as the "silent killer" since it has no early symptoms, is strongly connected to high sodium intake. Sodium is the major component of common salt and has a direct effect on blood pressure via altering fluid balance in the body. The low-sodium salt technique developed by CSIR-NIIST dramatically reduces sodium content while maintaining perceived saltiness in meals. The idea aims to make heart-healthy eating easier for families by keeping taste while reducing sodium exposure. 

Dr C. Anandharamakrishnan, Director of CSIR-NIIST, described the programme as a "festival of technology transfers", emphasising the institute's emphasis on industrial collaboration. He emphasised that product design was driven by real-world demand, and technologies were tuned to assure scalability and market acceptance. 

Aside from health-related essentials, the institute introduced a revolutionary instant coffee foam technology capable of maintaining rich froth at high temperatures without milk, which could assist lactose-intolerant consumers and others who choose plant-based diets. Additional technologies included sustainable materials, food processing improvements, and bio-based goods, demonstrating multidisciplinary expansion. 

Officials from the National Research Development Corporation emphasised increased efforts to speed commercialisation, such as financial aid, intellectual property facilitation, and incubator support. The emphasis, they stated, is on ensuring that publicly sponsored research provides demonstrable benefits to citizens. 

Scientific research repeatedly suggests that limiting dietary sodium reduces cardiovascular risk, whereas low-GI diets assist diabetics in controlling blood glucose and avoiding long-term issues. The CSIR-NIIST strategy aims to simplify illness management at the household level by incorporating these ideas directly into ordinary food staples. 

If effective, treating diabetes and blood pressure in India could soon begin in grocery stores—with a simple change in the brand of rice and salt in the family kitchen.
