Dancing Boosts Happy Hormones and Rewires Aging Brains, Finds Study
In a culture where dance is synonymous with celebration, from Sangeet ceremonies to Garba nights and morning park gatherings, new research reveals that these happy movements may have unexpected benefits for the ageing brain. Scientists now believe that dancing can improve brain health not only through exercise but also through something as powerful as social joy.
A research team at Kyoto University in Japan investigated if structured dance lessons could benefit elderly persons who were showing early signs of memory loss. The study focused on adults suffering from Subjective Cognitive Decline (SCD), a condition in which people believe their memory is deteriorating despite the fact that regular medical testing shows otherwise. Experts consider SCD to be an early warning sign that can lead to more serious disorders such as Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and, eventually, dementia.
"We focused on SCD because earlier intervention is more important for dementia prevention," explained first author Masatoshi Yamashita.
The study included 53 people aged 65 to 84. Researchers initially performed cognitive tests and evaluated brain activity with functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI), a scanning technique that detects changes in blood flow to determine which areas of the brain are active. They also tested oxytocin levels, which are known as the "happy hormone" and are released during bonding, social engagement, and positive emotional experiences.
Participants were separated into two groups. One group went through twelve weeks of dance training, learning choreography set to familiar music. The other group continued with their usual programme, without the dance sessions. After three months, the researchers carried out the brain scans and memory tests on the same people again.
The results showed that people who took dancing lessons had much higher levels of oxytocin. Brain scans also showed that functional connectivity had increased, which means that different parts of the brain were able to talk to each other better. Changes were detected in the default mode network, a system in the brain that remains active at rest and is important for memory and self-reflection. Stronger synchronisation in this network is thought to be crucial for cognitive health in older persons.
However, the researchers found no significant increase in cognitive test results during the brief trial time. Mental health measures remained mostly unaltered.
"Other factors contributing to the null results include the cognitive load, intensity, or duration of the dance lesson," explained project leader Kaoru Sekiyama. “These factors will need to be further examined.”
Experts point out the participants already had relatively high baseline cognitive scores, which could have limited measurable development. Nonetheless, the scientific findings, particularly the increase in oxytocin and improved brain connections, show that dance may promote brain resilience over time.
The findings have cultural significance in India, where community dance is an integral part of daily life and festivities. Unlike medication-based therapies, dance is accessible, social, and emotionally uplifting. The accumulating evidence reframes dementia prevention as a social experience rather than a rigid medical practice.
While more extensive research is required before making solid clinical recommendations, the message is clear: mobility mixed with connection may be important. In the study of ageing, joy may be shown to be a powerful therapy.
