Delhi Doctors Pull Off Rare Life-Saving Feat, Save 9-Month-Old in Coma Within Just Four Days

 Imagine the anxiety of parents rushing their 9-month-old baby to the hospital, only to be told that she had slipped into a coma, her tiny body battling severe respiratory failure and multiple organ stress. For one family in Delhi, this nightmare became a reality — but thanks to quick thinking and extraordinary teamwork at Rainbow Children’s Hospital, Malviya Nagar, their little one was brought back from the brink in just four days.


The infant, weighing only 7.5 kg, was admitted after five days of poor feeding and growing breathlessness. By the time she reached the emergency department, her condition had deteriorated alarmingly — she was unresponsive, her blood tests revealed dangerously abnormal levels, and doctors feared an inborn error of metabolism.

What happened next was a race against time. The child was immediately moved to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), placed on a ventilator, and surrounded by a team of specialists in critical care, nephrology, and emergency medicine. With her life hanging by a thread, the doctors decided on a rare and risky procedure — dialysis, something almost never attempted in infants this small.

“It was a tough call, but we knew that clearing her body of toxic build-up was the only chance,” said one of the senior doctors.

The hospital’s paediatric nephrology team carried out continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), a delicate procedure that required minute-by-minute monitoring. The gamble paid off. Within 24 hours, signs of hope began to appear — her neurological responses improved, her breathing stabilised, and her lab results started looking better.

Further tests confirmed the underlying cause: Long-Chain Fatty Acid Oxidation Defect (LC-FAOD), a rare genetic disorder hat prevents the body from breaking down certain fats, especially during illness or fasting. Left untreated, it can trigger life-threatening metabolic crises.

By the fourth day, the transformation was nothing short of remarkable. The baby was awake, feeding well, and showing no signs of neurological damage. She was discharged soon after, with a tailored plan for specialised dietary and metabolic care.

“Performing dialysis in such a small infant is extremely rare. It took seamless teamwork across multiple specialties, and we are overjoyed that she made a full recovery,” said a relieved doctor from the team.

For the family, what began as a terrifying ordeal ended with gratitude — and a powerful reminder of how timely intervention, medical expertise, and coordinated care can change the course of life in the most fragile of patients.
