District-level committee finds multiple violations during inspection; Delhi government considers action against the hospital

Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh, has come under scrutiny following allegations of serious negligence in patient care and several administrative irregularities. Acting on the directions of Delhi Chief Minister , a multi-department inspection team conducted a detailed investigation of the hospital and reportedly found several violations. The Delhi government has decided to initiate action against the hospital, while a detailed inquiry report is being prepared.

The investigation was ordered after a family approached the Chief Minister during a public grievance hearing at the Chief Minister’s Janseva Sadan. The family alleged that their son, who was injured in a knife attack in the Shalimar Bagh area, was taken to Fortis Hospital for emergency treatment. They claimed that the hospital demanded payment before starting treatment and that delays in receiving timely medical care resulted in the patient’s death.

Taking serious note of the complaint, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta directed officials to investigate the allegations of negligence and irregularities at the hospital.

On Thursday, a team led by , along with officials from the health department, municipal corporation, fire services and other departments, inspected the hospital premises. During the inspection, the team reportedly identified several concerns, including alleged misuse of building provisions, unauthorised construction, issues with fire safety systems, misuse of basement space and lapses in standard operating procedures (SOPs) related to medical services.

The inspection team also reviewed CCTV footage related to the emergency case involving the young man who died after the knife attack. According to officials, the footage showed that the patient had reached the emergency department walking on his own, raising concerns over whether timely medical intervention could have changed the outcome.

The team also examined emergency department records and other relevant documents. District Magistrate S.S. Parihar said that considering the alleged violations and lapses in patient care, the government has decided to take action against the hospital. A comprehensive investigation report is currently being prepared.

The case has once again brought attention to the importance of timely emergency care, patient safety standards and strict compliance with healthcare regulations in hospitals.
