Four-Year-Old Walks Again After Groundbreaking Spine Surgery in Thanjavur
In a medical triumph blending precision, technology, and multidisciplinary expertise, a four-year-old boy, once paralysed in all four limbs, is taking his first assisted steps after a groundbreaking neurosurgery at Meenakshi Hospital here. The success story overcomes not just a traumatic spinal injury but also an exceptionally rare genetic disorder that complicated every step of his care.
The child, whose identity is protected, was brought to the hospital in a state of quadriplegia—complete paralysis of both arms and legs—following a minor fall. Advanced imaging at the hospital revealed a severe Atlanto Axial Dislocation (AAD), where the top two vertebrae in his neck were misaligned, crushing the spinal cord. Further evaluation unveiled an even greater challenge: the boy has Spondyloepiphyseal Dysplasia Congenita, a rare genetic skeletal condition affecting bone growth and development, occurring in roughly 1 in 100,000 live births.
"This case presented a perfect storm of challenges," said Dr. Arun Kumar, Head of the Department of Neurosurgery at Meenakshi Hospital, who led the surgical team. "Pediatric spine surgery is inherently delicate. Performing it on bones weakened and altered by this rare condition required extreme precision and tailored planning. Our goal was not just to stabilize his spine, but to give him back his future."
The surgical team, including neurosurgeons Dr. Arun Kumar and Dr. Kaveeze, performed a highly complex procedure known as Occipito Cervical Transfacetal Screw Fixation. Using specialized intraoperative neuro-monitoring to safeguard the spinal cord in real-time, they inserted screws into the skull and upper spine to permanently correct the dislocation and relieve pressure on the nerves.
"The margin for error was virtually zero," Dr. Kumar explained. "The neuro-monitoring acted as our guide, letting us know instantly if any nerve pathway was at risk during the procedure."
The surgery's success was a hospital-wide effort. The anesthesia team, led by Drs. Arimanikam and Vinodha Devi, managed the critical task of keeping the child stable despite his compromised anatomy. Post-operative recovery in the ICU was overseen by critical care specialists Drs. Shobana Devi and Siva Kumar, while Dr. Abdul Rahman, Pediatrician, managed the child's overall health and growth-related challenges.
Three months post-surgery, the results are transformative. The child has steadily regained movement in his limbs and has begun walking with support—a milestone his family feared they might never see.
