In a major step towards integrating traditional wisdom with modern food regulation, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has launched a dedicated licensing and registration facility for Ayurveda Aahara products on its Food Safety Compliance System (FoSCoS) portal.

The initiative, under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, allows manufacturers across the country to seamlessly apply for licenses to produce and market Ayurvedic foods. By formalising this category under a new Kind of Business (KoB) framework, FSSAI aims to align traditional Ayurvedic recipes—documented in classical texts—with contemporary food safety and quality standards.

Officials say the move will boost both the food and Ayurveda industries, creating a regulated pathway for products while ensuring authenticity. Rooted in Ayurveda’s principle of personalised nutrition (prakriti-based diets), the framework is expected to support prescribed treatment plans and make regulated formulations more widely available to the public.

To guide the industry, FSSAI has published a list of 91 pre-approved Ayurveda Aahara recipes, issued on July 25, 2025. These serve as a reference point for food business operators to manufacture products with regulatory compliance.

Developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Ayush, the initiative underscores the government’s push to bring Ayurveda into mainstream food systems while safeguarding public health and consumer trust.
